In a bid to strengthen user privacy, WhatsApp has introduced a new layer of protection through the “Secret Code” feature for Chat Lock. This innovative addition aims to heighten the security of users’ conversations, particularly in situations where multiple individuals share a device or there is a concern about unauthorized access.
Mark Zuckerberg, Meta’s CEO, expressed his excitement about the update, saying, “We’re rolling out the secret code to Chat Lock on WhatsApp, allowing you to safeguard your chats with a unique password. Now, you can set your locked chats to only appear when you type the secret code in the search bar, ensuring that no one can accidentally stumble upon your most private conversations.”
How Does the Secret Code Feature Work?
WhatsApp explains that the secret code feature enables users to create a distinct password exclusively for their locked chats, adding an extra layer of privacy beyond the standard phone unlocking mechanism. Importantly, this password is separate from the one used to unlock the user’s device. Users can also choose to hide the Locked Chats folder from their chat list, ensuring these conversations remain concealed until the secret code is entered in the search bar. However, for those who prefer visibility, an option to display locked chats in the chat list is available.
In a user-friendly upgrade, WhatsApp simplifies the process of locking a chat by allowing users to long-press on the chat instead of navigating through the chat’s settings. The company expressed gratitude for the positive reception of Chat Lock, stating, “We’re thrilled that our community has been loving Chat Lock, and we hope that the secret code makes it even more useful to them.”
Availability of the Feature
The Secret Code feature is set to roll out today and is expected to be accessible globally in the coming months. WhatsApp emphasizes its commitment to continually enhancing Chat Lock, stating, “We’re excited to keep bringing more functions to Chat Lock to help people protect their privacy.”
