In a significant move in the tech industry, Microsoft has officially onboarded former OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and ex-president Greg Brockman to spearhead a groundbreaking artificial intelligence (AI) research team. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made the exciting announcement, marking a pivotal moment for the company’s foray into advanced AI research.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of OpenAI appointing Twitch co-founder Emmett Shear as its interim CEO, a move that adds a layer of dynamism to the evolving landscape of tech leadership. Despite these changes, Microsoft is poised to maintain its strategic investments in OpenAI, showcasing a commitment to collaborative innovation.
As of November 20, Satya Nadella took to the company’s internal communication platform, X, to reveal the latest additions to Microsoft’s roster of AI experts. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, along with their accomplished team, will steer the ship of the newly formed advanced AI research team.
“We’re extremely excited to share the news that Sam Altman and Greg Brockman, together with colleagues, will be joining Microsoft to lead a new advanced AI research team. We look forward to moving quickly to provide them with the resources needed for their success,” Nadella stated.
We remain committed to our partnership with OpenAI and have confidence in our product roadmap, our ability to continue to innovate with everything we announced at Microsoft Ignite, and in continuing to support our customers and partners. We look forward to getting to know Emmett…

Emphasizing the ongoing collaboration with OpenAI, Nadella expressed confidence in the shared vision and product roadmap. He affirmed Microsoft’s dedication to innovation, as demonstrated by recent announcements at Microsoft Ignite, and underscored the commitment to supporting customers and partners.
Sam Altman, in response to Nadella’s announcement, succinctly declared, “The mission continues.” Altman had been in negotiations to return as OpenAI CEO; however, the four-person board, supported by former interim CEO Mira Murati, rejected the terms, citing unmet requirements.
Elon Musk, a prominent figure associated with both Microsoft and OpenAI, responded to Nadella’s post with a touch of humor, poking fun at the use of Microsoft Teams for various functionalities. Musk, known for his expanding ventures, teased Microsoft’s use of Teams for video conferencing and meetings, a domain where his own projects, including X features, are making strides.
The tech industry is abuzz with anticipation as Altman, Brockman, and their team embark on a new chapter at Microsoft, pushing the boundaries of AI research and innovation. The evolving landscape promises exciting developments, with both Microsoft and OpenAI at the forefront of shaping the future of technology.
